iPhone SE 4 should have the oomph to run Apple Intelligence

Apple is rumored to release a fourth-generation iPhone SE next year, and the handset should be compatible with the upcoming Apple Intelligence features.

The system requirements for Apple Intelligence list at least the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s A17 Pro chip on the phone side (all of the upcoming iPhone 16 models this year will run Apple Intelligence, too). An Apple silicon M1 chip or later is required to use Apple Intelligence on an iPad or Mac.

These requirements are pretty tight, leaving fans of the iPhone SE wondering whether the next iteration to the iPhone SE will have the hardware oomph to run Apple’s AI features. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it will. This is important news, given the iPhone SE is Apple’s most affordable handset.

Will the iPhone SE 4 run Apple Intelligence?

Gurman wrote in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that the fourth-generation iPhone SE “will look like an iPhone 14, with a crisper OLED display that stretches across the full device,” adding, “You can also bet that it will have Apple Intelligence.” As Apple Intelligence requires 8 gigabytes of RAM, we can infer that the iPhone SE 4 will run at least an A17 Pro or newer with 8 gigabytes of RAM.

The fourth-generation iPhone SE is expected to ditch the outdated Home button and the fat “forehead” and “chin” at the top and bottom. The device is rumored to adopt a fullscreen OLED display panel and swap the rear 12-megapixel shooter with a 48-megapixel one. It looks like Face ID might be part of the upgrade, which would be awesome as Apple would finally have all-Face ID iPhones in its lineup. The device should start at the same $429 price as the current model.

Gurman also wrote in the newsletter that the rumored ultra-slim “iPhone Air” model won’t get specifications on par with iPhone Pros until 2027.
